RIP, Frank Stith
Jun. 10th, 2007 06:58 pmMy late father's father, Grandpa Frank, died in January. His wife Ann didn't know how to reach me and my twin brother, so I just got the news today when I called to talk to him.
He was in his 90s, and one of the side effects of our father's death was reconnecting with him. We only met him in person once or twice (it's a long trip from KY to AK), and then I had to call him and tell him his son had died, in 2005. He and his wife Ann spent over an hour on the phone with me that day, telling me their memories about our father. Grandpa Frank and I talked sporadically on the phone after that. I realized we had a lot in common - pragmatism, and a commitment to public service. I meant to call him around New Year's, but as usual, I let other things get in the way. That's a habit I need to break.
