THEN: June 1996
NOW: June 2006

1) How old were you?
THEN: 25
NOW: 35

2) Where did you work?
THEN: I believe I was between jobs. I'd just left my billing dept supervisor job and was looking for software work. I spent most of the summer of 96 on vacation, went to Thunder Bay, Ontario, came home, drove around California, camped, had a good time.
NOW: I'm on hiatus from work to go to law school, transitioning from software to law.

3) Where did you live?
THEN: West Coast
NOW: East Coast

4) How was your hair style?
THEN: Shoulder-length blonde.
NOW: Long and red. Or maybe middling-to-long and red. Dark red, not titian.

5) Did you wear contacts?
THEN: No
NOW: No

6) Did you wear glasses?
THEN: Yes.
NOW: Yes.

7) Who was your best friend?
THEN: this is the type of question I don't answer.
NOW: ditto

8) Who were your pets?
THEN: None. O.B., the last of our huskies, belonged to my mom.
NOW: Pepper and Gina.

9) Who was your partner/romantic interest?
THEN: In 1996, I lived with a nice man, E.M.
NOW: No one.

11) Who was your celebrity crush?
THEN: God, I don't know. Was Babylon 5 on at that point? Probably Dana Scully, then. I don't crush much on actors, I crush on their characters.
NOW: I don't watch TV, so I'm not "up" on the current cover boys or girls.

12) Who was your regular-person crush?
THEN: My what?
NOW: My who?

13) How many piercings did you have?
THEN: Ears, either one or two, I don't recall.
NOW: Ears, two.

14) How many tattoos did you have?
THEN: None, but plenty of design ideas.
NOW: None, but plenty of design ideas.

15) What was your favorite band/singer?
THEN: I have no idea. Maybe Marc Cohn.
NOW: It just varies so much, depending on what I'm in the mood for, am I feeling retro, and so on.

16) Had you smoked a cigarette?
THEN: Yes. Cigars, too.
NOW: ditto.

17) Had you gotten drunk?
THEN: *looks highly amused*
NOW: ditto

18) Looking back at your decade-ago self, are you where you thought you would be in 2006?

No, not at all. I knew that I'd last about 10 years in software, but I didn't have a solid idea of what would come next. I suspected higher level design or something with a more regular work schedule, but no clear ideas. However, by that time I was just barely, barely, not even really, starting to realize that if I wanted that retirement as a gentleman farmer with a home office and short stories to write into my dotage, maybe I should get some practice in along the way.

But even by then, I'd figured out that "plans" are a just a shorthand way of labelling "things that won't happen". I'd already left with my B.S. and didn't go straight on to graduate school, so I knew that whatever I thought my life was going to be like, was probably wrong. I was right.
